Howard Franklin Shears, Jr., 78, a resident of Chesapeake, VA, crossed the bar on June 16, 2011, at his home.

A native of Michigan, he was the son of the late Howard F. Shears and the late Ethal A. Riley Shears. Born in Allegan County, MI on March 11, 1933, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 after graduating from Ostego High School in 1951. He retired from U.S. Naval Service in 1982 as a Chief Warrant Officer after 30 years of service to his country during peace and war.

Mr. Shears is survived by his wife Alice of 49 years; three children, Patsy Samborowski and her husband Mark, Bill Shears, and Arthur Shears and his wife Leslie; a sister, Joyce Shears; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Family will join friends Thursday, June 23, 2011, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel with service at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the home of Mark and Pat Samborowski. Burial will be at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego, Allegan County, Michigan.
